Frequently Asked Questions

I try to run JMagnetic on my Ubuntu installation, but when starting JMagnetic there appears an error about non-implemented toolkit functions.

The default Java Virtual Machine for Ubuntu installations is the GNU Java environment. At the time of this writing the GNU environment does not fully support Java Swing applications. Use the SUN JRE for Linux instead.

When I play Wonderland or the Magnetic Scrolls Collection I cannot see the game graphics.

By default the graphics were disabled in the Magnetic Windows games. To enable please enter the command graphics. You might want to use the "auto-graphics" option in the preferences dialog of JMagnetic which will turn on graphics automatically when running a Magnetic Windows game.

How do I open the hint window when playing a non-Magnetic Windows game?

The browseable hints were a new feature of the Magnetic Windows games. The old games require you to enter some ciphered hint code when using the hints command. These ciphered codes are included with the original game manuals.

When saving or restoring the game I am asked to enter the full path to the file. Can I use a standard file open or file save dialog?

To open a standard file dialog when running the "old-style" games, enter * as file name. The Magnetic Windows game always open a standard file dialog.

I created a game script using the scripting feature of Magnetic, however when I try to play the script back the game acts differently.

Most Magnetic Scrolls games contain random elements. To use the scripting feature you must make game randomness predictable using the #seed command.

When playing Wonderland, I can hear the title music, but not the in game music.
The title music comes from a MP3 file, the in-game music requires a MIDI device. Please open the preferences dialog and verify that a valid MIDI device is selected for output.
